This past February, the beautiful city of Amsterdam hosted one of the largest technology conferences in Europe — the DEVWorld 2024 Conference. The event, known for its scale and diversity, brought together thousands of tech enthusiasts from around the globe to engage in a variety of tech-centric activities.

The conference, staged at Amsterdam's main expo center, was a technological marvel. The venue transformed into an expansive tech playground featuring open halls divided by curtains, creating a unique open-air feel. This setup facilitated a flow of ideas among attendees, all equipped with headphones to dive into various talks without disturbance.

Singula Team’s dive into programming languages

Our own Grigory Petrov, an experienced software engineer and thought leader in the programming community, delivered a presentation that really resonated with the attendees.

The talk focused on a critical examination of the inherent slowness of popular programming languages like Python and Ruby. His presentation, "Why are some programming languages slower than others?" delved into their semantics and syntax, offering a new perspective on how language design impacts performance.

Grigory articulated how languages with rich semantics provide developers with the ability to describe complex operations with fewer lines of code but at the cost of speed and sometimes reliability. This rich semantic layer allows for greater expressiveness but requires the language to perform more background analysis, which can slow execution.

Conversely, languages designed with leaner semantics tend to run faster because they place more constraints on coding flexibility, reducing the burden on the language's runtime environment. Grigory used Python and Ruby as primary examples to illustrate how decisions made at the language design level affect the trade-offs between expressiveness and performance.

The response to Grigory’s presentation was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees, ranging from fellow programmers to industry analysts, engaged in spirited discussions following the talk, eager to explore the implications of the insights for their work.

The Conference Experience

Beyond the speeches and technical discussions, DEVWorld offered many activities that made it more than just a conference. Attendees had the opportunity to explore Amsterdam in unique ways, such as bike tours and canal rides. For those with a competitive streak, the conference featured retro gaming setups, AR laser gaming, and high-speed racing simulations.

Networking was in full swing at the grand 5-in-1 party, where attendees enjoyed free drinks and lively music, creating the perfect atmosphere to forge new connections and discuss innovative ideas. Additionally, workshops on 3D printing led by Janos Kehl offered hands-on learning experiences for participants interested in the practical aspects of technology.
